Four products. One name.
“Short-term loan” is used for four things that cost radically different amounts. On the same $500, the six-month PAL example costs less than the payday scenario's 84 days of renewals. The range runs from $41.63 to $450.00. Working out which one you are being offered is worth more than anything else on this page.
Illustrative cost on $500: six-month PAL vs 84-day payday renewals
$41.63
$450.00
Credit-union PAL at one end, a single-payment loan renewed five times at the other. Same money, but not the same horizon: the PAL runs for six months while the payday example covers 84 days. At the end of the payday scenario, the $500 principal is still owed in full.
Cheapest first, which is unusual.
Most sites in this category order these by what they earn. This one orders them by what they cost you, which puts the option that pays us nothing at the top.
- 01
Credit-union PAL
Payday Alternative Loan
$41.63
on $500 over 6 months
- Amount
- $200 – $2,000
- Term
- 1 – 12 months
- Balance falls with each payment?
- Yes
Offered by federal credit unions under an NCUA rule that caps the rate at 28% APR and the application fee at $20. Membership is usually easy to obtain and often geographic. This is the cheapest short-term borrowing most people can actually access, and it pays us nothing — which is precisely why it is first on this list rather than buried at the bottom.
Rate: Capped at 28% by federal rule
The catch: You have to be a member, and some credit unions require 30 days of membership before lending. Worth joining before you need it rather than during.
- 02
Installment loan
Amortizing, fixed end date
$78.79
on $500 over 6 months at 36% with a 5% fee
- Amount
- $100 – $5,000
- Term
- 3 – 24 months
- Balance falls with each payment?
- Yes
Repaid in scheduled monthly payments, each reducing the balance. The defining feature is amortization: the debt has a date on which it ends, and the total cost is known before you sign. This is the product referrals on this site lead to, and it is a structural improvement on anything that renews — but the rate range above is enormous, so which end of it you land on matters more than the product name.
Rate: Roughly 36% – 225%, varies widely by lender and state
The catch: A 200% APR installment loan will not trap you the way a rollover does, and it will still take a large share of your income for a year. Structure is not the same thing as price.
- 03
Cash-advance app
Earned-wage advance
$11.99
on $200 over 14 days
- Amount
- $20 – $500
- Term
- Until your next payday
- Balance falls with each payment?
- No
Advances money you have already earned. Genuinely cheap if you take the free option and skip the tip — and considerably more expensive than it looks once an instant-transfer fee and a default tip are added. Most of these apps quote no APR at all, which is not an accident: expressed annually the numbers are uncomfortable.
Rate: No stated APR. $200 with an expedite fee and a tip annualises to roughly 156%
The catch: Decline the expedite fee and set the tip to zero and this is close to free. Accept both and $12 on $200 over two weeks is about 156% APR — higher than most installment loans.
- 04
Payday loan
Single payment, renewable
$450.00
on $500 across 6 cycles
- Amount
- $100 – $1,000
- Term
- 7 – 31 days
- Balance falls with each payment?
- No
One lump-sum repayment, typically on your next payday. It does not amortize, so when it cannot be cleared in full the usual alternative is renewal for a new fee — the same principal, charged for again. Prohibited or effectively unavailable in a substantial number of states, and where it is available the rollover rules matter more than the headline fee.
Rate: $15 per $100 over 14 days annualises to about 391%
The catch: The fee sounds modest once. Renewed five times on $500 it reaches $450.00 while the $500 remains outstanding in full. That is the whole mechanism.
How to tell which one you are being offered.
From the disclosure alone, in under a minute. The marketing page will not tell you; the payment schedule will.
- 01Count the paymentsMultiple scheduled payments ending at a zero balance is an installment loan. One date and one amount equal to principal plus fee is a single-payment loan, whatever the marketing calls it.
- 02Look for the words renewal, rollover, or extensionTheir presence tells you the product anticipates not being repaid on the first attempt. That is a design decision rather than an accident, and it is where the cost accumulates.
- 03Find the total of paymentsAn amortizing loan states it, because it is knowable. A single-payment loan cannot, because the total depends on how many times it is renewed.
- 04Check whether the fee recursA one-time origination fee raises the estimated APR once. A fee charged every cycle is the entire cost structure and it has no ceiling.
- 05Verify the licenceNMLS Consumer Access is free and takes about a minute. A licensed lender exceeding your state's ceiling, or an unlicensed one at any rate, is a reason to walk away from an otherwise attractive number.
A poor credit file narrows the options. It does not remove them.
Credit unions look at more than a score
Many will lend on the strength of a deposit relationship, direct-deposit history, or membership tenure rather than a score alone. The 28% PAL ceiling applies regardless of your credit file, which makes this the option a low score costs you least.
Soft inquiries let you shop without damage
Initial matching frequently uses a soft pull that does not affect your score. Several personal lenders will pre-qualify the same way. Use that to compare three or four real rates before letting anyone run a hard inquiry.
Nobody can guarantee approval
Not us, and not a lender before verification. A site promising guaranteed approval regardless of credit is describing an advance-fee fraud pattern rather than a lending product, and it is the single clearest warning sign available to you.
The rate is where bad credit actually costs you
Approval is usually the easier half. The expensive half is landing at the top of a range instead of the bottom, and that gap on a small loan over a year is frequently measured in hundreds of dollars. Comparing is worth more than applying quickly.
Cheaper than borrowing.
We earn a referral fee when someone borrows through this site and nothing at all when they do any of the following. They are listed here anyway, because at these amounts they are simply cheaper.
Ask the biller before the due date
Utility, medical, and municipal providers grant hardship plans routinely, at no interest, and far more readily before a payment is missed than after. It costs one phone call.
Move a due date
Many providers will shift a payment to align with your payroll cycle. Free, permanent, and frequently the entire solution.
Ask payroll about earned-wage access
Many payroll providers now advance wages already earned at little or no cost. One email to HR settles whether yours does.
Dial 211
Local rent, utility, and food programmes exist for gaps of exactly this size and are chronically under-claimed.
Talk to a nonprofit counsellor
NFCC-affiliated agencies generally consult free and can renegotiate what you already owe. The step people take last and most often wish they had taken first.
What your amount actually repays.
Each page below shows the monthly payment and the total across every realistic rate and term, computed rather than estimated.
Your state may have already settled this
Payday loan availability and fee limits vary by state. The applicable rules also depend on the type of loan and lender. Our state guides distinguish verified information from entries still awaiting review.
We do not publish per-state ceilings we have not read from the statute ourselves, because getting that wrong could cost you money. These two sources are free, take about a minute each, and are definitive.
Short-term loans: common questions
What is a short-term loan?
Any credit repaid over weeks or a few months rather than years. In practice the phrase covers four quite different products: a credit-union Payday Alternative Loan capped at 28% APR, an amortizing installment loan, an earned-wage advance from an app, and a single-payment payday loan. In these illustrative scenarios, the PAL runs for six months while the payday example covers 84 days of renewals. Their costs differ by around $408, but the horizons and repayment structures are not identical, so establish which product and schedule you are being offered before signing.
What is the cheapest short-term loan?
For most people, a Payday Alternative Loan from a federal credit union. An NCUA rule caps the rate at 28% APR and the application fee at $20, which makes it materially cheaper than anything else on this page — about $41.63 on $500 over six months. We earn nothing when someone takes one. It is listed first anyway, because at small amounts it is simply the right answer.
Can I get a short-term loan with bad credit?
Lenders in this market do consider applicants with imperfect credit, and initial matching often uses a soft inquiry that does not affect your score. Final underwriting may involve a hard inquiry. Two things worth being clear about: nobody can guarantee approval before verification, and any site promising it is describing a fraud pattern rather than a product. Also, a poor credit file does not remove the credit-union option — many will lend on the strength of a deposit relationship rather than a score alone.
How much does a short-term loan actually cost?
Compare on two numbers and ignore the rest. First, total cost of credit in dollars — interest plus fees. Second, estimated APR with fees folded in, because a stated rate frequently excludes the origination fee. Borrow $500 at 36% with a 5% fee and you receive $475.00 while repaying as though you received $500, so the real cost is about 54.8%, not 36%. Never compare on the monthly payment: a longer term always makes that figure smaller while making the total larger.
What is the difference between a short-term loan and a payday loan?
A payday loan is one kind of short-term loan — the single-payment kind. The distinction that matters is whether the balance amortizes. An installment loan reduces the principal with every payment and ends on a date stated in the agreement. A single-payment loan leaves the principal whole until it is cleared in one go, and when it cannot be, renewal for a new fee is usually the only alternative to default. Count the payments on the disclosure: multiple scheduled payments ending at a zero balance is one product, one date and one amount is the other.
Are short-term loans legal in my state?
Payday loan availability and fee limits vary by state. The applicable rules also depend on the type of loan and lender. Our state guides distinguish verified information from entries still awaiting review. That has a practical consequence worth acting on: if you live in a capped state, the alarming end of every published APR range cannot legally be offered to you, which changes what counts as a bad offer. Confirm the current position with your state regulator — the CSBS directory resolves to the right agency anywhere — and check the lender on NMLS Consumer Access before you sign.
How fast can I get a short-term loan?
Some lenders fund the same or next business day after approval, but timing is never guaranteed. It depends on identity and income verification, cut-off times, weekends and holidays, and your own bank's processing. Speed is also the weakest reason to pick a lender: the rate outlasts the wait by every month of the term, and choosing on funding speed is how people end up at the expensive end of a wide range.
What should I check before signing anything?
Four numbers, all required in writing under the Truth in Lending Act before you sign: the APR, the finance charge, the total of payments, and the payment schedule. Then four terms: whether early repayment is free, what the late and returned-payment fees are, whether the lender reports to the credit bureaus, and whether any fee is deducted from your proceeds or added to the balance. And one absolute rule — if anyone asks for a payment before your loan is funded, stop. Legitimate U.S. lenders deduct fees from proceeds or add them to the schedule. A demand for money up front is disqualifying on its own.
Is there a way to avoid borrowing at all?
Often, and it is worth ten minutes before committing to a rate. Ask whoever you owe for a payment plan — utility and medical providers grant them routinely, and far more readily before a due date than after. Ask payroll whether they offer earned-wage access; many providers now advance wages already earned at little or no cost. Dial 211 for local rent, utility, and food programmes, which exist for gaps of exactly this size and are chronically under-claimed. None of those pays us anything, and all three are cheaper than every product on this page.
